The Partnership for Strong Communities last Monday held its first match-making expo, in which more than three dozen city and town officials got 90 seconds or so to promote their housing wish-lists and blueprints to some two dozen entrepreneurs, lenders, lawyers and others with backgrounds in developing multi-family and mixed-use projects.
Several participants say the two-hour event was worth it and already look forward to the next one. The partnership is working on plans for another event this fall, he said. But many Connecticut communities, particularly smaller ones, lack contacts and experience with developers who know where and how to build what towns are lacking, Fink said. Conversely, developers are busy people, too, and don’t always know which communities and sites within them are ripe for redevelopment.
Also in attendance was an informational panel of representatives or heads from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, the state Department of Housing, and the federal Housing and Urban Development, among others. She pitched them on the redevelopment potential of the stalled former Elmcrest Hospital site along Route 66, the town’s commercial corridor.

Social bonding is fundamental to human society, and romantic interest involves an important type of bonding. Speed dating research paradigms offer both high external validity and experimental control for studying romantic interest in real-world settings. While previous studies focused on the effect of social and personality factors on romantic interest, the role of non-verbal interaction has been little studied in initial romantic interest, despite being commonly viewed as a crucial factor.
Directional predictive body sway coupling, but not body sway similarity, predicted interest in a long-term relationship above and beyond rated physical attractiveness. In addition, presence of groovy background music promoted interest in meeting a dating partner again. Overall, we demonstrate that romantic interest is reflected by non-verbal body sway in dyads in a real-world dating setting.
This novel approach could potentially be applied to investigate non-verbal aspects of social bonding in other dynamic interpersonal interactions such as between infants and parents and in non-verbal populations including those with communication disorders.

Marriage data show a strong degree of positive assortative mating along a variety of attributes. But since marriage is an equilibrium outcome, it is unclear whether positive sorting is the result of preferences rather than opportunities. We assess the relative importance of preferences and opportunities in dating behaviour, using unique data from a large commercial speed dating agency. While the speed dating design gives us a direct observation of individual preferences, the random allocation of participants across events generates an exogenous source of variation in opportunities and allows us to identify the role of opportunities separately from that of preferences.
We find that both women and men equally value physical attributes, such as age and weight, and that there is positive sorting along age, height, and education. The role of individual preferences, however, is outplayed by that of opportunities.
In , a German-based company, in collaboration with its U. Extensively documented evidence exists that PET imaging affects the staging and management of cancer patients, and there is no doubt that PET should be offered in addition to the currently reimbursed anatomic imaging procedures. The use of the CT images for noiseless attenuation correction of the PET data, the improved quality of the PET images, and the min whole-body scan times greatly benefit the patient. In neurology, for example, the simultaneous mapping of MRI spectroscopy and molecular changes may ultimately lead to new insight into brain activation or may support neurosurgical intervention.
One wonders how many combinations of PET with a reimbursed anatomic imaging modality it will take before PET imaging too is reimbursed. In view of the expanding range of multimodality imaging options, efficacy studies are increasingly justified to help establish the appropriate choice of imaging techniques for a particular disease or clinical indication. These studies should, where appropriate, involve both standalone and combined imaging modalities, even though most advanced PET technology today is available only in combination with CT.

Coleman, who has participated in Volunteer New York! Nonprofit Board Boot Camp is designed to put together local nonprofit agencies seeking board leadership with candidates who want to make a mark in the nonprofit sector. Many nonprofits need fresh blood and new ideas for their missions. Sometimes the best boost to an organization is to draw from a pool of outside candidates who bring a new perspective or experience from another organization.
In some cases, professionals who have not previously served on boards make for great candidates but they are not in the loop. In , more than board matches were made as a result of this series. Each participating nonprofit at Board Boot Camp typically sits down with up to eight participants interested in meeting with them.

Choosing the right mentor is crucial for effective mentorship. Yet, many medical students have difficulties finding a suitable mentor. Thus we developed mentoring speed dating MSD as a promising matching tool to connect students and faculty mentors successfully. They conducted four focus groups with mentees and mentors who participated in a mentoring speed dating event and analyzed transcripts using conventional content analysis with inductive categorizing.
In addition, three mentoring cohorts two matched via MSD, one matched via conventional online profiles were surveyed on mentorship satisfaction and the 1-year continuance of their mentorship was monitored. Fifteen mentees and fifteen mentors participated in the focus groups. The authors identified several themes such as short and long term benefits of MSD and fulfillment of expectations.
Benefits included finding out about the personal connection, matching expectations, providing an efficient overview of candidates. MSD is a valuable matching tool with beneficial effects on the mentorship quality.

They had four seconds to answer. In that four seconds, the scientists saw the brain light up in some fascinating ways.

Lawrence retirees attended a speed dating session at the Lawrence Public Library on Monday, but it was nonprofit organizations they were there to connect with. That need — at times, desperate — is felt by many organizations in the area, according to Cathy Hamilton, who helped organize the event. She said that by and large, most nonprofits she has been in contact with — and in Lawrence, there are many — need volunteers.
And some of the best people to help fill that need are retirees, who tend to be reliable, motivated and looking for things to do. This was the second time the library has hosted a Volunteer Speed Dating event. The first one, in September, actually did include a bell, Hamilton said, and people would move from one table to another at each ding. After the presentations, the representatives from each organization were stationed at individual tables around the room, at which attendees could approach them for additional information.
One of the representatives was a retiree himself. Charley Crabetree, who was with the League of Women Voters, is a two-time retiree and said he is passionate about helping other retirees find ways to fill their time. He called on the attendees to volunteer if they are interested in government or civic responsibility.
Speed Dating For NonProfits & Would-Be Board Members
Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. SpeedDating , as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. Speed dating , as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events.
The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”.
Students would join one of the visiting professionals at a round table usually joined by other students and had the chance to spend twenty minutes talking to them, asking them questions, and getting a feel for what a career in a certain field would be like. There were about ten other students with me at the table. This was the first round, so there was some awkward silences before the conversation really got going, but once we broke the ice, I had an extremely enlightening discussion about what it is to be a Foreign Service Officer as well as options and advice for a career in the State Department.
My last conversation was with Bob Stains, Jr. The company started out in the U. Bob talked about how important it was to acknowledge cultural ticks that can make or break communication, things as small as pointing your feet at someone. This is another lesson that is invaluable to anyone on the search for a global career. I walked away from these discussions with a different idea of what a Global Career is and what my future could look like.
